Not illustrated. 1894 Excerpt: ...roots, stems, or fruits should be procured direct from the persons who make a practice of gathering them in the jungles, or by sending a trained servant along with these persons to see the articles collected or to collect them himself. Bazaar-purchased collections are, as a rule, useless, partly because they are very often old and insect-eaten, partly because they are frequently adulterated, but mainly because there is little or no chance of their exact source being determined. Local officers should therefore concern themselves with the produce of their own districts, not articles that are imported from other localities. Having secured the required quantity, each sample should be carefully dried for some time, and when ready for despatch should be placed in a small cotton bag with a ticket tied on to the mouth, which should bear the number assigned to the sample and its vernacular name; but the number should also be written on the cotton bag itself in case the ticket gets destroyed. If the sample be a dye-stuff, it should next be accompanied with say lib of the dye preparation, as used by the local dyers, and sent in a bottle or otherwise so as to preserve it against atmospheric influences. Examples of cloth dyed with the material alone and dyed with it in combination with other dye-stuffs would also be instructive. Smaller quantities of the other dyes, as also of the mordants employed, should be furnished, even if these chance not to be local produce, so that the account of the local methods of using the dye may be made perfectly clear.
